A Heritage Rooted in the Seventeenth Century

The origins of viticulture at Lafite extend to at least the 1680s, when the Ségur family began assembling the estate's vineyard holdings. By the early 18th century, wines from Lafite had gained recognition at the French court and across aristocratic Europe. The estate's reputation was formally consecrated in 1855, when it was classified as a First Growth alongside Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion, with Mouton Rothschild later elevated in 1973.

Baron James de Rothschild acquired Château Lafite at public auction in 1868, establishing a connection to the Rothschild family that has endured across five generations. The estate remains under the stewardship of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), which oversees a portfolio of properties across Bordeaux and beyond while maintaining Lafite's position at the centre of the family's winemaking identity.

The Vineyard and Its Terroir

Lafite's approximately 112 hectares of vineyards occupy a gentle plateau and slope north of the town of Pauillac, in close proximity to the border with Saint-Estèphe. The soils are composed primarily of deep Günzian gravel—fine, well-drained stones deposited during the Quaternary period—underlain by limestone. This geological foundation, combined with the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde, creates ideal conditions for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon while preserving freshness and aromatic precision.

Cabernet Sauvignon typically represents around 70% of the vineyard, with Merlot contributing approximately 25%, and the remainder planted to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Parcel selection is determined each year based on rigorous tasting and analysis, with only the finest fruit reserved for the Grand Vin. The remaining parcels contribute to Carruades de Lafite, the estate's second wine, which shares the same commitment to terroir expression but offers a more accessible profile and shorter cellaring requirement.
