From Cellarman to Benchmark Producer

Luciano Sandrone began his career working in the cellars of Marchesi di Barolo before turning his attention to his own small parcels of vines. In 1977, he vinified his first harvest from a modest holding in Cannubi Boschis, one of Barolo's most celebrated crus. The wine was bottled and released under his own label in 1978, marking the formal establishment of the estate.

Over the following decades, Sandrone expanded his vineyard holdings gradually and deliberately, acquiring parcels across several of Barolo's finest sites. His early work helped define a generation of producers who sought to preserve Barolo's identity while refining its expression through greater precision in both vineyard and cellar.

The Vineyards of Cannubi Boschis and Le Vigne

The estate's flagship wine comes from Cannubi Boschis, a south-facing slope within the broader Cannubi zone immediately southwest of Barolo village. This cru is characterised by compact calcareous marl soils and optimal sun exposure, conditions that favour concentration, aromatic complexity and structural finesse in Nebbiolo.

Barolo Le Vigne is drawn from multiple parcels scattered across the Barolo commune, including holdings in Baudana, Merli and Vignane. These varied exposures and soil types allow the wine to express a more representative and accessible interpretation of the appellation, combining elegance with approachability.

Barolo Aleste, introduced in 1990, represents the apex of the Sandrone portfolio. Produced from the oldest vines within Cannubi Boschis and released only in exceptional vintages, it is a wine of remarkable depth, tension and longevity.

Precision Rooted in Tradition

Luciano Sandrone's approach balances respect for Piedmontese winemaking heritage with measured innovation. Extended maceration extracts colour and tannin while preserving aromatic purity, and maturation in French oak barriques—carefully chosen and never heavily toasted—adds structure without obscuring the wines' origin.

The result is a collection of Barolos recognised for their clarity, refined tannins and ability to evolve gracefully over two to three decades. Across every vintage, Sandrone's wines reflect a singular vision: Nebbiolo shaped by some of Barolo's finest sites and crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

Barolo/Barbaresco - Barolo/Barbaresco

Barolo and Barbaresco are widely regarded as Italy's most prestigious wine regions and represent the benchmark for Nebbiolo worldwide. Located in the Langhe hills of Piedmont in northwestern Italy, these neighbouring DOCG appellations combine centuries of winemaking tradition with exceptional terroir, producing some of the most sought-after and age-worthy wines in the world. Often described as the 'King and Queen of Italian wine', Barolo and Barbaresco have established Piedmont as one of the greatest fine wine regions alongside Bordeaux and Burgundy.

The regions benefit from a continental climate moderated by Alpine influences, with calcareous marl and sandstone soils that create ideal conditions for Nebbiolo. Barolo covers eleven communes including the renowned crus of Cannubi, Brunate and Bussia, producing powerful, structured wines that require extended ageing. Barbaresco, located northeast of Barolo, encompasses four communes and produces wines that are typically more approachable in their youth while retaining remarkable elegance and complexity. Both regions demonstrate extraordinary site-specific expression, with individual vineyards—known as Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGAs)—producing distinct interpretations of Nebbiolo's signature aromas of rose, tar, cherry and truffle.

The regions are home to legendary producers including Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa, Bartolo Mascarello, Giuseppe Rinaldi, Gaja, Produttori del Barbaresco and Roagna. Together these estates represent a culture of meticulous vineyard management, respect for tradition and uncompromising quality that has made Barolo and Barbaresco among the world's most collectible wines.

Whether exploring historic vintages, renowned crus or iconic producers, Barolo and Barbaresco offer an unrivalled journey through Italy's finest wine heritage. Discover Barolo/Barbaresco wines, compare prices from trusted merchants across Europe and find the best offers with Sipfind.

Grapes
Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the noble red grape of Piedmont in northwestern Italy, best known as the variety behind the celebrated wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Despite its relatively pale colour, Nebbiolo produces wines of remarkable structure, complexity and longevity, combining naturally high acidity with powerful tannins.

Classic Nebbiolo is distinguished by an expressive aromatic profile of red cherry, rose, violet and dried flowers, often developing notes of spice, herbs, leather, tobacco and truffle with age. The grape is particularly sensitive to its growing site, allowing differences in soil, altitude and exposure to create highly distinctive expressions.

Nebbiolo reaches its greatest fame in the Langhe hills, where Barolo and Barbaresco demonstrate the grape’s exceptional capacity for ageing and reflecting terroir. Beyond these renowned appellations, Nebbiolo is also cultivated across northern Piedmont and parts of Lombardy, producing styles ranging from elegant and aromatic to intensely structured.

Its combination of perfume, acidity, tannin and longevity has established Nebbiolo as one of Italy’s most important and distinctive red grape varieties.

Vineyard, Terroir and Style

Luciano Sandrone established his estate in 1978 and quickly gained recognition for his meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking. The Cannubi Boschis vineyard, acquired in the late 1970s, sits on the hillside below the original Cannubi cru, benefiting from ideal south-facing exposure and calcareous marl soils that impart distinctive minerality and complexity. Sandrone's philosophy balances respect for tradition with modern precision, employing extended maceration and careful oak maturation to extract the full potential of the fruit while preserving the varietal purity of Nebbiolo.

History and Reputation

The wine typically displays classic Barolo characteristics: perfumed aromatics of rose, tar, and red cherry, supported by firm yet refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Its structure and balance make it ideal for extended cellaring, developing tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and dried herbs over decades. Barolo Cannubi Boschis pairs beautifully with braised meats, game, risotto, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.
