A House Built on Terroir and Family

Joseph Drouhin established the House in 1880, acquiring choice vineyard parcels and building relationships with trusted growers across Burgundy. His vision combined the reach of a négociant—sourcing and maturing wines from across the region's appellations—with the precision that comes from owning and farming exceptional sites. This dual identity has remained central to the House's philosophy for more than 140 years.

The Drouhin family has maintained unbroken ownership and management across four generations. This continuity has allowed the House to preserve long-standing partnerships with vignerons while expanding its estate holdings to include some of Burgundy's most celebrated Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.

The Jewel of the Estate: Clos des Mouches

At the heart of the Drouhin estate lies the Beaune Premier Cru vineyard Clos des Mouches, a 14.7-hectare site located just south of Beaune on the hillside overlooking the village. The House owns the majority of this Premier Cru, with parcels planted to both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyard's name, dating back centuries, reflects its position as a historic enclosure of distinction.

Clos des Mouches produces both red and white wines of remarkable depth and finesse. The white, made entirely from Chardonnay, is recognised for its luminous fruit, mineral precision and ability to age gracefully for decades. The red combines elegance with structure, offering silky texture, red fruit complexity and a long, harmonious finish. Both wines exemplify the Drouhin philosophy: patient vineyard stewardship and gentle cellar work allow the terroir to speak with clarity.

Prestige Holdings Across the Côte d'Or

Beyond Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin controls holdings in some of Burgundy's most revered Grand Cru sites. In the Côte de Nuits, the House owns parcels in Musigny, one of Burgundy's most celebrated vineyards, as well as in Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Griotte-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares. These wines represent the apex of the Drouhin portfolio, combining concentration, aromatic complexity and exceptional longevity.

In the Côte de Beaune, the House holds parcels in Corton-Charlemagne, producing a powerful and age-worthy expression of Grand Cru Chardonnay. The estate's geographic breadth extends north to Chablis, where holdings in Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards yield wines of steely minerality and precise structure, and south to the Côte Chalonnaise and Beaujolais, where the House crafts accessible yet serious expressions of regional terroir.

Elegance Through Restraint

Drouhin's winemaking is defined by restraint rather than intervention. Sustainable viticulture, with organic and biodynamic practices in key parcels, ensures healthy, balanced fruit. In the cellar, gentle handling, indigenous yeast fermentation where appropriate and careful maturation in French oak barrels preserve the purity and site character of each wine.

The result is a portfolio that spans the full range of Burgundy's appellation hierarchy—from regional Bourgogne to exceptional Grand Cru bottlings—each crafted with the same attention to authenticity, balance and ageing potential. Maison Joseph Drouhin's wines are celebrated by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide for their ability to capture the essence of Burgundy with clarity, elegance and depth across every vintage.

Bourgogne - Northern Burgundy

Northern Burgundy is a respected wine region in eastern France, encompassing the historic appellations of Chablis and the Auxerrois. Known primarily for exceptional Chardonnay grown on Kimmeridgian limestone and fossilised oyster shell soils, the area produces distinctive wines celebrated for their minerality, precision and remarkable ageing potential. The cool continental climate and unique geological composition create ideal conditions for expressing pure Chardonnay character, making the region a benchmark for unoaked and terroir-focused white wine production.

Chablis remains the most recognised appellation within Northern Burgundy, with seven Grand Cru vineyards including Les Clos, Vaudésir and Blanchot producing wines of notable depth and complexity. Premier Cru sites such as Montmains, Fourchaume and Vaillons offer refined expressions of the region's signature style. Respected producers including Domaine William Fèvre, Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Vincent Dauvissat and Domaine Christian Moreau consistently demonstrate the region's capacity for world-class Chardonnay that balances steely minerality with elegant fruit character.

Grapes
Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most important and prestigious white wine grapes, renowned for its remarkable versatility and ability to reflect both terroir and winemaking style. Most famously associated with Burgundy and Champagne in France, Chardonnay is cultivated across virtually every major wine-producing country and can produce everything from precise, mineral-driven whites to rich, complex wines with exceptional ageing potential.

In Burgundy, Chardonnay reaches some of its most celebrated expressions. The limestone-rich vineyards of Chablis are known for wines combining vibrant acidity, citrus character and mineral precision, while the Côte de Beaune, particularly appellations such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, produces some of the world’s most sought-after and age-worthy white wines.

Chardonnay also plays a fundamental role in Champagne, where it contributes freshness, finesse and acidity to blends alongside Pinot Noir and Meunier. When produced exclusively from Chardonnay, the resulting Champagne is known as Blanc de Blancs, a style prized for its elegance, precision and capacity to develop considerable complexity with extended ageing.

The grape’s character varies significantly according to climate, terroir and winemaking. Cooler regions can produce wines showing citrus, green apple, white flowers and mineral notes, while warmer conditions can bring peach, melon and tropical-fruit character. Oak fermentation, barrel ageing and malolactic fermentation can introduce additional layers of toast, vanilla, butter and hazelnut, demonstrating Chardonnay’s exceptional stylistic range.

Beyond France, Chardonnay has established important expressions in California, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and numerous other wine regions. From the mineral whites of Chablis and the great vineyards of Burgundy to Blanc de Blancs Champagne and modern New World interpretations, Chardonnay’s combination of versatility, complexity and terroir expression has established it as one of the defining grape varieties of fine wine.

Vineyard, Terroir and Style

Maison Joseph Drouhin, established in 1880, has maintained vineyards and production facilities in Chablis through its Drouhin-Vaudon label, ensuring direct control over viticulture and winemaking. The estate's holdings span carefully selected parcels that benefit from the region's cool continental climate and ancient marine fossil-rich soils, which impart the characteristic steely minerality that distinguishes Chablis from other Chardonnay-producing regions worldwide.

History and Reputation

The wine showcases classic Chablis characteristics: bright citrus notes of lemon and green apple, complemented by flinty mineral undertones and crisp acidity. Vinified primarily in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity, this approach allows the terroir to speak clearly without the influence of oak. The resulting wine is precise, clean, and elegantly structured, offering immediate drinking pleasure while possessing sufficient backbone for modest cellaring.

Joseph Drouhin Chablis serves as an excellent introduction to both the appellation and the producer's winemaking philosophy. Compare prices on Sipfind to discover this benchmark expression of classic Chablis that continues to define quality and authenticity in white Burgundy.
