Château Pétrus

Château Pétrus is widely regarded as Pomerol's leading estate and one of the world's most prestigious Merlot-based wine producers, commanding prices comparable to Bordeaux's First Growths despite the appellation's lack of a formal classification system. The 11.5-hectare property has been owned and managed by the Moueix family since 1945, with stewardship passing to Olivier Berrouet as winemaker in 2008 following his father Jean-Claude's retirement. The estate produces a single wine each vintage—a Merlot-dominated blend of remarkable power, elegance and ageing potential that has become a global benchmark for the variety.

The Blue Clay Plateau

The defining characteristic of Pétrus is its terroir—a small plateau in the centre of the Pomerol appellation composed of a rare blue clay known locally as *crasse de fer*. This clay, rich in iron and smectite minerals, retains moisture during dry periods and provides exceptional drainage during wet vintages, creating ideal conditions for Merlot to ripen slowly and completely.

The vineyard sits at an elevation of approximately 40 metres, one of the highest points in Pomerol, and benefits from a slight incline that further improves drainage. Beneath the clay lies a subsoil of gravel and iron-rich sand formed during successive geological periods. This complex structure allows vines to develop deep root systems and contributes to the wine's signature concentration, mineral structure and capacity for extended ageing.

No other property in Pomerol possesses the same proportion or depth of this blue clay. It is this geological singularity that has allowed Pétrus to establish its identity and reputation.

Merlot Elevated

Merlot comprises approximately 95% of the vineyard, with the remaining 5% planted to Cabernet Franc on lighter, gravel-rich soils near the edges of the property. This near-total focus on Merlot distinguishes Pétrus from the Cabernet Sauvignon-led estates of the Left Bank and reflects the variety's natural affinity with Pomerol's clay terroirs.

Vines average around 40 years of age, though some parcels contain significantly older plantings. Yields are kept deliberately low through green harvesting and rigorous selection, typically averaging 35 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. Harvesting is conducted plot by plot, often over several passes, to ensure that each grape reaches optimal phenolic ripeness. In certain vintages, the estate has employed up to 180 pickers over a single afternoon to capture fruit at the precise moment of maturity.

The result is a Merlot of extraordinary depth—dark fruit, truffle, earth, violet and spice layered over velvety tannins and a mineral backbone that provides both structure and freshness.

Craftsmanship and Consistency

Winemaking at Pétrus follows a restrained, classical approach that prioritises fruit purity and terroir expression. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, with gentle extraction and careful monitoring throughout. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 to 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, sourced primarily from coopers who work closely with the estate.

The Moueix family's philosophy has remained unchanged across generations: allow the vineyard to speak. No second wine is produced. Fruit that does not meet the standard for the Grand Vin is declassified and sold in bulk or under a generic Pomerol label. This uncompromising selection ensures that every bottle of Pétrus represents the estate's finest expression.

Olivier Berrouet, who succeeded his father Jean-Claude in 2008, has maintained this continuity while introducing incremental refinements in vineyard management and cellar technique. The style remains unmistakably Pétrus—powerful yet refined, structured yet approachable with time, and built to evolve gracefully over 30 to 50 years or more.

Bordeaux - Pomerol

Pomerol is one of the most respected wine appellations in Bordeaux and has earned international recognition for producing exceptional Merlot-based wines of extraordinary elegance and depth. Located on the Right Bank near Saint-Émilion, this small appellation combines centuries of winemaking tradition with some of the most distinctive terroir in France. Despite having no formal classification system, Pomerol commands some of the highest prices in the fine wine market and remains highly sought-after by collectors worldwide.

The appellation covers approximately 800 hectares characterised by gravel, clay and iron-rich soils known locally as crasse de fer. This unique terroir provides ideal conditions for Merlot, which typically comprises 70-90% of plantings, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role. The iron-oxide content in the soil contributes to the wines' distinctive mineral character, concentration and remarkable structure. Cool clay subsoils retain moisture during dry summers, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop exceptional complexity.

Pomerol is home to some of Bordeaux's most distinguished estates, including Pétrus, widely regarded as one of the greatest wines in the world, alongside Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan, Lafleur, Trotanoy and L'Évangile. These wines are celebrated for their velvety texture, intense dark fruit, refined tannins and outstanding ageing potential. The absence of a formal classification has allowed quality and reputation to speak for themselves, creating a distinctive culture of excellence.

Grapes
Merlot

Merlot is one of the world’s most important red wine grapes, celebrated for its generous fruit, supple texture and ability to produce wines ranging from approachable and elegant to exceptionally complex and long-lived. Originating in Bordeaux, France, Merlot is particularly associated with the Right Bank, where it forms the foundation of many of the prestigious wines of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

Merlot typically expresses flavours and aromas of plum, black cherry, blackberry and red fruits, often developing notes of chocolate, tobacco, cedar, herbs and earthy complexity with maturation. Its naturally rounded texture and generally softer tannin profile distinguish it from Cabernet Sauvignon, although the finest examples can possess considerable structure, freshness and ageing potential.

In Pomerol, Merlot reaches some of its most celebrated expressions, particularly on the appellation’s clay-rich soils, producing wines of remarkable concentration, texture and complexity. In Saint-Émilion, it is commonly blended with Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon, creating wines that combine ripe fruit with structure, aromatic complexity and longevity.

Beyond Bordeaux, Merlot is widely cultivated in Italy, California, Washington State, Chile and other major wine regions. It can be produced as a varietal wine or used as a central component of blends, where its fruit and texture complement more structured grape varieties.

From the great Merlot-based wines of Bordeaux’s Right Bank to leading expressions around the world, Merlot’s combination of rich fruit, refined texture and capacity to express terroir has established it as one of the defining varieties of fine red wine.
