A Vision Beyond Vega Sicilia

When Mariano García left Vega Sicilia after three decades as winemaker, he carried with him an unrivalled understanding of Ribera del Duero's potential. Together with Javier Zaccagnini, he founded Bodegas Aalto in 1999 with the intention of creating wines that expressed the region's character through old vines, limestone terroir and restrained winemaking.

Rather than purchasing vineyards outright, García chose to work with trusted growers farming parcels he had identified across Ribera del Duero. This approach allowed access to some of the appellation's finest and oldest Tempranillo vines, many planted decades before the region achieved widespread recognition.

The first vintage was released in 2000. Within a few years, Aalto had established itself as a benchmark for modern Ribera del Duero, combining intensity and structure with elegance and drinkability.

Old Vines and Continental Precision

The estate sources fruit from meticulously selected parcels where vines range from 40 to over 100 years of age. These old plants, deeply rooted in limestone soils enriched with clay and gravel, naturally limit yields and produce small, concentrated berries with balanced acidity and ripe tannins.

Ribera del Duero's continental climate brings hot summer days and cool nights, with diurnal temperature shifts that can exceed 20 degrees Celsius during the ripening period. This variation preserves freshness and aromatic complexity while allowing Tempranillo to reach full phenolic maturity.

García's intimate knowledge of the region's microclimates and soils guides every sourcing decision. Each parcel contributes specific characteristics to the final blend, creating wines that reflect the diversity and quality of Ribera del Duero's finest vineyard sites.

Three Expressions of Tempranillo

Aalto, the estate's signature wine, represents the core philosophy: balance, purity and immediate appeal combined with serious ageing potential. It is a Tempranillo of depth and approachability, built to express the character of old vines without excessive extraction or oak dominance.

Aalto PS (Pagos Seleccionados) comes from the finest parcels within the estate's sourcing network. With greater concentration, structure and complexity, it is designed for collectors seeking wines of exceptional longevity. Extended barrel ageing in French oak adds layered complexity while preserving the wine's core of dark fruit and mineral precision.

Aalto Reserva Especial is produced only in vintages of outstanding quality. This limited release represents the summit of the estate's portfolio, combining the intensity of the best parcels with extended maturation to create a Tempranillo of remarkable power, refinement and cellaring potential that can evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.

Region

Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is widely regarded as one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions and has established itself among the world's great producers of age-worthy red wines. Located along the Duero River in north-central Spain, the region combines centuries of winemaking tradition with exceptional high-altitude terroir, producing some of the most sought-after and collectible wines in Europe. Since receiving Denominación de Origen status in 1982, Ribera del Duero has become synonymous with powerful, structured Tempranillo that rivals the finest wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

The region stretches across the Castilla y León plateau at elevations between 750 and 1,000 metres, where continental climate extremes create ideal conditions for Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País. Limestone and clay soils combined with dramatic diurnal temperature variation produce wines of remarkable concentration, intense fruit character and extraordinary ageing potential. Hot summer days and cool nights preserve natural acidity while developing deep colour and complex tannins. The region's four provinces—Burgos, Valladolid, Segovia and Soria—each contribute distinctive expressions of high-altitude Spanish terroir.

Ribera del Duero is home to legendary estates including Vega Sicilia, whose Único remains one of the world's most collectible wines, alongside Pingus, Dominio de Pingus, Pesquera, Alión and Hacienda Monasterio. These producers have established the region's reputation for meticulous viticulture, extended oak ageing and wines of outstanding depth and longevity. The region's classification system designates Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines based on ageing requirements, ensuring consistent quality across all tiers.

Whether exploring iconic estates, benchmark vintages or the distinctive character of high-altitude Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero represents the pinnacle of Spanish fine wine. Discover Ribera del Duero wines, compare prices from trusted merchants across Europe and find the best offers with Sipfind.

Grapes
Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain’s most internationally recognised red grape variety and the foundation of many of the country’s greatest wines. It reaches particularly distinguished expressions in Rioja and Ribera del Duero, where differences in altitude, climate and ageing traditions create remarkably diverse styles.

The grape typically combines flavours of red and dark cherry, plum and blackberry with notes of herbs, spice and tobacco. With oak ageing, Tempranillo can develop characteristic aromas of cedar, vanilla, leather and dried fruit, while retaining the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin that gives the finest examples considerable ageing potential.

Tempranillo adapts particularly well to Spain’s continental conditions. In the high-altitude vineyards of Ribera del Duero it can produce concentrated, powerful wines with firm structure, while Rioja is renowned for expressions ranging from vibrant and fruit-driven to complex, traditionally matured wines.

Known locally by names including Tinto Fino, Tinta del País and Cencibel, Tempranillo is grown across much of Spain and has become one of the defining varieties of Spanish wine. Its combination of structure, versatility and ability to express both terroir and maturation makes Tempranillo one of the world’s important red wine grapes.

Vineyard, Terroir and Style

Bodegas Aalto works with over 100 hectares of vineyards spread across the Ribera del Duero, selecting fruit from vines aged between 40 and 100 years. The terroir benefits from the region's continental climate, extreme diurnal temperature variation, and diverse soils ranging from clay-limestone to gravel. These conditions contribute to the wine's concentration, structure and aromatic complexity. The estate's commitment to viticulture and rigorous selection ensures only the finest fruit enters the flagship bottling.

History and Reputation

Aalto displays a modern interpretation of Ribera del Duero Tempranillo, balancing power with elegance. The wine typically shows concentrated dark fruit, notes of liquorice, tobacco and spice, supported by structured tannins and fresh acidity. Maturation in French oak adds subtle complexity without overwhelming the varietal character. The result is a wine that expresses both terroir and the producer's distinctive style.
