One of Napa's Founding Estates

Jacob and Frederick Beringer, German immigrants with roots in the Rheingau, established their winery in St. Helena during the formative years of Napa Valley viticulture. Between 1876 and the late 1880s, they excavated a network of underground cellars directly into the hillside, a project completed entirely by hand. These tunnels, extending roughly 365 metres and maintaining naturally cool, stable conditions, remain in active use today.

Beringer is one of the few Napa wineries to have operated continuously through Prohibition, surviving by producing sacramental wine. This unbroken lineage connects the estate's present-day winemaking to the earliest chapter of California's fine wine tradition.

Vineyards Across Napa's Sub-Appellations

Rather than relying on a single estate vineyard, Beringer sources fruit from a carefully selected network of sites spanning Napa Valley's diverse sub-appellations. Howell Mountain, with its high elevation, volcanic soils and cooler temperatures, contributes structure and intensity. Knights Valley, located northeast of Calistoga, offers fruit marked by concentration and firm tannins shaped by warmer daytime temperatures and cool nights.

The Carneros District, influenced by its proximity to San Pablo Bay, provides Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with natural acidity and freshness. Additional parcels in St. Helena and surrounding areas contribute to the estate's ability to craft wines that express both varietal character and distinct site identity.

The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

At the centre of Beringer's range stands the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, first produced in 1977. Sourced primarily from exceptional parcels across Napa Valley's mountain and valley-floor appellations, the wine is built around Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and occasionally Petit Verdot.

Extended maceration, careful oak selection and maturation in French oak barrels—typically a high percentage new—contribute to a wine recognised for its concentration, structured tannins and layered complexity. The Private Reserve has earned critical acclaim over multiple decades and remains a reference point for collectors seeking Napa Cabernet with both immediate appeal and the potential to evolve gracefully over 15 to 20 years.

Tradition and Scale

Beringer operates as a large-scale producer, crafting wines across a wide spectrum of price points and styles. Alongside its reserve-tier offerings, the estate produces accessible Napa Valley varietals and regional bottlings that reach a broad audience.

The combination of scale and historic continuity distinguishes Beringer within California wine. Its hand-dug cellars, vineyard access and multi-tiered portfolio reflect an estate shaped by nearly 150 years of adaptation, resilience and evolving interpretation of Napa Valley terroir.

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is the most prestigious wine region in the United States and has become synonymous with world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and premium winemaking. Located in Northern California approximately 80 kilometres north of San Francisco, the valley combines exceptional growing conditions with pioneering innovation, producing wines that consistently rank among the finest in the world. Since the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, when Napa wines triumphed over prestigious Bordeaux châteaux in a blind tasting, the region has established itself as one of the great wine regions alongside Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Despite covering a relatively small area of approximately 19,000 hectares, Napa Valley contains an extraordinary diversity of soils, elevations and microclimates across 16 distinct AVAs. Cool morning fog from San Pablo Bay moderates temperatures in the southern Carneros and Oak Knoll districts, providing ideal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while warmer northern appellations such as Calistoga and St. Helena favour bold Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Mountain districts including Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and Diamond Mountain produce wines of exceptional structure and complexity from volcanic and sedimentary soils. Benchmark appellations such as Oakville, Rutherford and Stags Leap District each contribute unique expressions of terroir, with Rutherford's famed "Rutherford Dust" tannins and Stags Leap's elegant, refined style.

The region is home to many internationally acclaimed estates, including Screaming Eagle, Opus One, Harlan Estate, Dominus Estate, Shafer Vineyards, Caymus Vineyards, Cakebread Cellars and Spottswoode. These producers represent a culture of meticulous vineyard management, sustainable viticulture and uncompromising quality that has made Napa Valley one of the world's most respected and collectible wine destinations.

Vineyard, Terroir and Style

Beringer's Private Reserve program was established to showcase the very best fruit from the estate's holdings, with vineyard sites chosen for their ability to produce Cabernet of exceptional concentration, structure and varietal character. The wine benefits from Napa Valley's ideal Mediterranean climate, where warm days and cool nights allow for optimal phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity. Extended ageing in French oak barrels adds layers of complexity and integration.
