A Winery That Redefined American Fine Wine
When Robert Mondavi opened his own winery in 1966 at the age of 52, following his departure from the family's Charles Krug operation, he brought an uncompromising vision: to prove that Napa Valley could produce wines equal to the finest of Europe. His approach combined respect for Old World tradition with American innovation, emphasising site selection, French oak ageing and extended cellaring.
The winery's mission-style architecture, designed by Cliff May, became a symbol of California wine culture. More importantly, Mondavi's commitment to quality, transparency and education helped shift global perception of American wine from novelty to serious contender.
The Heart of To Kalon
At the centre of Robert Mondavi Winery's identity lies its connection to To Kalon Vineyard, a historic Oakville site first planted in 1868 by Hamilton Walker Crabb. The name, meaning "highest beauty" in Greek, reflects the vineyard's long-recognised potential for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional concentration and complexity.
Robert Mondavi acquired a portion of To Kalon in 1966, and the estate has continued to farm significant parcels within this renowned vineyard. The site's well-drained gravelly loam soils, combined with warm days and cool evenings moderated by San Pablo Bay, create ideal conditions for steady, even ripening. These parcels supply fruit for the winery's top-tier Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and single-vineyard To Kalon selections, wines characterised by dense black fruit, structured tannins and remarkable longevity.
Fumé Blanc and the Sauvignon Blanc Tradition
In 1968, Robert Mondavi introduced Fumé Blanc, a barrel-fermented style of Sauvignon Blanc inspired by the wines of Pouilly-Fumé but adapted to express Napa Valley's warmer climate and riper fruit profile. The name and approach helped redefine American Sauvignon Blanc, moving it away from simple, crisp styles toward wines with greater texture, aromatic complexity and ageing potential.
Today, Reserve Fumé Blanc remains central to the winery's portfolio. Sourced from estate vineyards in Oakville and other cooler Napa sites, the wine undergoes partial barrel fermentation and extended lees contact in French oak, resulting in a Sauvignon Blanc that balances citrus intensity, herbal nuance and a rounded, layered palate.
Traditional Winemaking and the Reserve Programme
The Reserve programme represents the pinnacle of Robert Mondavi Winery's efforts. Fruit is sourced from specific blocks within the estate's finest vineyards, harvested by hand and fermented in small lots to preserve site identity. Ageing takes place predominantly in French oak barrels, with new oak percentages carefully calibrated to frame rather than dominate the wine's structure.
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon typically blends parcels from To Kalon and other distinguished Oakville sites, emphasising balance, elegance and the capacity to develop over 15 to 20 years or more. The resulting wines are built around concentrated cassis and dark berry fruit, framed by fine-grained tannins, integrated oak and a mineral backbone that reflects the gravelly soils of their origin. They remain among the most recognised and collected expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
