The Monopole Heart of Vosne-Romanée

The domaine's identity rests upon its exclusive ownership of Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, two Grand Cru vineyards that have defined the estate since the 18th century. Romanée-Conti itself, at just 1.81 hectares, sits mid-slope above the village of Vosne-Romanée with an ideal south-easterly exposure. Its limestone soils, fine drainage and carefully managed old vines yield wines of unmatched aromatic refinement and structural elegance.

La Tâche, covering 6.06 hectares, occupies higher ground with slightly cooler conditions and deeper clay content. The result is a wine of greater power and breadth, yet with the same hallmark finesse. Together, these monopoles represent the purest expression of the domaine's philosophy: meticulous vineyard stewardship in service of singular terroir.

Ownership of these sites has been continuous since the mid-18th century, when Prince Louis François de Bourbon-Conti acquired the vineyard that would bear his name. The estate was later consolidated and expanded to include La Tâche in 1933, cementing its position as Burgundy's most distinguished producer.

Eight Grand Cru Vineyards

Beyond its monopoles, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds parcels in six additional Grand Cru sites. In Vosne-Romanée, the domaine cultivates sections of Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands-Échézeaux and Échézeaux, each contributing a distinct expression of Pinot Noir shaped by differences in soil composition, elevation and microclimate.

Richebourg, for example, produces wines of intensity and structure, while Romanée-Saint-Vivant offers greater aromatics and elegance. Grands-Échézeaux and Échézeaux, though less tightly wound, display remarkable depth and complexity with time.

The domaine also owns a small parcel in Corton and holdings in Le Montrachet, the latter producing the estate's only white wine. This Chardonnay from Montrachet undergoes the same exacting standards as the reds: biodynamic viticulture, minimal intervention and extended barrel ageing. The result is a wine of piercing mineral precision, citrus concentration and extraordinary persistence.

Biodynamic Stewardship and Minimal Intervention

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti adopted biodynamic practices beginning in the mid-1980s under the guidance of Aubert de Villaine, long before such methods became widespread in Burgundy. The approach emphasises soil vitality, biodiversity and vine health, with preparations applied according to lunar and planetary cycles. Chemical treatments are entirely avoided.

In the cellar, intervention remains minimal. Whole-cluster fermentation is standard, with natural yeasts and extended maceration encouraging extraction of flavour, colour and fine tannins without harshness. Ageing takes place in 100% new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, though the wood influence remains entirely integrated, never dominating the wine's intrinsic character.

Yields are among the lowest in Burgundy, averaging below 30 hectolitres per hectare and often considerably less. This discipline, combined with rigorous selection during harvest and vinification, ensures that only fruit of exceptional quality reaches the bottle. Production figures are correspondingly modest: Romanée-Conti itself averages fewer than 6,000 bottles per vintage, while total domaine production rarely exceeds 8,000 cases across all wines.

Wines Built for Centuries

The domaine's wines are distinguished not only by their immediate aromatic complexity and textural refinement but by their capacity to evolve over decades. Young examples can appear tightly wound, their tannins firm and their structure assertive. With time—often 15, 20 or 30 years—they develop layers of tertiary character: forest floor, dried flowers, truffle, leather and spice, all underpinned by a persistent mineral backbone.

Romanée-Conti itself is often described as possessing an ethereal quality, balancing power with weightlessness. La Tâche offers greater volume and generosity, yet retains the same architectural precision. The other Grand Cru bottlings, though more accessible in youth, reward patience with similar complexity and grace.

These wines command unparalleled demand among collectors and investors, consistently achieving record prices at auction. Yet their significance extends beyond market value. They represent the pinnacle of what Burgundy—and Pinot Noir—can achieve when terroir, viticulture and winemaking align across generations.
