The Northernmost Classified Growth of Saint-Estèphe
Château Calon Ségur occupies vineyards at the highest point of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, marking the northern boundary of Bordeaux's classified Médoc estates. The property's name derives from the Calones, a family of timber-transporting barges that navigated the Gironde in the Middle Ages, and the surname of the Marquis de Ségur, whose family controlled the estate through much of the 18th century.
The château was classified as a Third Growth in 1855 and has since built a reputation for producing wines that age gracefully over decades. Following its acquisition by Suravenir in 2012, the estate undertook extensive renovation of its facilities while preserving its traditional winemaking philosophy.
Elevated Terroir and Cool-Climate Structure
The estate's vineyards rise to approximately 17 metres above sea level, among the highest elevations in Saint-Estèphe. This topography, combined with clay-limestone soils enriched by pockets of Günzian gravel, imparts a distinctive freshness and minerality to the wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon typically dominates the vineyard composition and forms the backbone of the Grand Vin, supported by Merlot for roundness and Cabernet Franc for aromatic complexity. The cooler microclimate and clay-rich subsoils encourage slower ripening and the development of concentrated fruit while retaining natural acidity and structure.
The result is a wine that balances density with restraint—characterised by dark fruit, firm tannins, graphite-like minerality and a remarkable capacity to evolve over 20 to 40 years or more.
Continuity and Precision in the Cellar
Traditional winemaking methods guide vinification at Calon Ségur. Parcel-by-parcel selection allows for precise blending, and maturation takes place over 18 months in French oak barrels, the proportion of new wood adjusted according to vintage conditions.
Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, the estate's second wine, reflects the same attention to terroir and balance. Crafted from younger vines and parcels that do not enter the Grand Vin, it offers an earlier-drinking expression of the château's style while maintaining structure and depth. Both wines are vinified with the same rigour, ensuring consistency across the portfolio and preserving Calon Ségur's standing as one of the benchmarks of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.
